It may not have been the first commemorative artefact to hit the stores – we’d bet heavily on the Fifa-branded vuvuzuela in red and yellow - but it was pretty swift all the same, and it came from a somewhat unusual source.
Cuervo y Sobrinos may be Swiss owned but it originated in Cuba almost 130 years ago and is proud enough of its Cuban heritage to sell its watches packed in wooden humidor-style boxes.
It also seems to be particularly fond of Spain right now – and who knows that the Spanish government’s recent decision to take in a number of jailed Cuban dissidents isn’t partly responsible – to the extent that it has produced a great-looking watch to celebrate La Roja’s victory over Holland in the World Cup Final.
It is no less than Spain deserves after nobly resisting Holland’s strenuous attempts to kick its star players all over the veldt, and continuing to play football – as opposed to this – long enough to score the game’s only goal.
Of course, it also begs the question of exactly which watch should be presented to the Dutch to honour their role in the South African football jamboree. Maybe the Fossil Kicker in dayglo colours so you can see them coming or perhaps the Police “Outlaw”.
We might even suggest the Jaeger LeCoultre Master Minute Repeater, since this is the Dutchmen’s third consecutive losing final, though that would be just too cruel. As the best team in the world for the best part of the 1970s, they deserved to win the first two after all.
