This year the prize went to Liya Kebede, star of the film Desert Flower (directed by Sherry Hormann), an adaptation of the best-selling autobiography by supermodel Waris Dirie. The film and the book document Dirie's remarkable journey from the Somali desert where her family herded goats to the international catwalks and her personal campaign against female circumcision.
Before becoming an actress Kebede herself was a top model. She appeared on the cover of Vogue and in 2003 became the first woman of color to serve as the "face" of Esteé Lauder cosmetics.
