The new trends for SS11 are mere weeks away but already early adopters are getting in on the action. While the future of lipstick is magenta, watermelon and tangerine-hued, and Pantone has declared ‘honeysuckle’ the It colour for womenswear, we can decree that blue is the key colour when it comes to watches.
As TIME² watch buyer Keira Payne-Gibbs pointed out to me, people buy watches purely as fashion items now, often to colour-coordinate with their outfits.
The best thing about the blue trend is it’s a super-adaptable colour to wear. The most promising shade bubbling under is a dense, dark midnight - sophisticated but subtle and equally as wearable on men as on women.
Whether you wear it with khaki, denim, optic white, metallics or primary colours, a dark blue like Michael Kors or BCBG Max Azria works as a neutral of sorts. Even better is the new batch of two-tone blue and black watches. A more interesting way to do black, these watches (Maurice Lacroix anyone?) look especially strong with Burberry-esque slim-cut suits or, for the girls, semi-formal little black dresses.
