All the colour blocking and colour popping from the spring catwalks can make one feel a little overwhelmed. Who knew there was such a thing as too much fuchsia? So, for those days when it all gets too much, let’s be thankful for palate-cleansing neutrals like black, white and in particular, khaki.

Fashion’s favourite utilitarian shade, khaki lends itself well to the casual, rugged watches that are big news for spring. In fact, the bigger the better when it comes to military and safari-style watches.

Burberry’s unisex vintage-look watch has a black face with graphic white numbers and a sturdy khaki strap which looks equally good with casual chinos and worn-in shirts or a white cotton shift dress.

More masculine is the gunmetal chronograph watch from Guess – strictly speaking a man’s watch but works on a woman when accompanied with dust-hued army fatigues, a silk boyfriend shirt and heels. That said, you needn’t save your safari-chic watch for other sandy neutrals.

Michael Kors’ ceramic chronograph watches in gunmetal grey and olive green stand out beautifully against colour popping brights, whether that’s a tangerine tube dress or a fuchsia manicure.
