Once reserved for weekends and DIY, denim has whacked up the fashion factor in recent seasons. Basic skinnies and faded jeggings have given way to rich, indigo blues, sexy white cigarette crops and an entire rainbow of kaleidoscope brights...

Snatching the crown from Liz Hurley, the current queen of the white jean is Elle McPherson who has taken the once-derided denim to newly luxe heights. Worn with a fresh-from-Cannes tan and half-tucked tee, all that’s needed is a glamorous gold watch. Go for masculine luxe with a heavyweight chronograph from Michael Kors or opt for sleek, slender curves from D&G. Ebel’s bracelet watch mixes silver and rose gold steel with discreet diamond dot markers.

Dark denim suggests a more masculine approach to wrist wear. Anything from ToyWatch in dark, macho colours will fit the bill, as well as something classic and leather-strapped from Raymond Weil.

Between Isabel Marant’s bubblegum pink rebel jeans (think Michelle Pfeiffer in Grease 2) and Current Elliot’s paintbox-hued skinnies, the immediate future looks bright for denim. Turn down the volume by teaming with an oversized grey marl tee and a mannish steel timepiece from Raymond Weil or TAG Heuer.
