It may not have the high profile ambassadors or vast marketing budget utilised by the upper echelons of the luxury watch market, but Sekonda can’t be beaten when it comes to the affections of the British public. For the past twenty years, Sekonda has been the biggest-selling watch brand in the UK, outshining all domestic and Swiss rivals when it comes to putting timepieces on wrists on these shores.
The brand launched in the UK in 1966, at a time when the British ruled the world in terms of music, fashion, sport and culture. Yet its fascinating origins actually go further back – and beyond the Iron Curtain. In 1930, Joseph Stalin ordered the foundation of the famous First State Watch Factory in Moscow. Using machinery and parts purchased from a defunct American watchmaker, the state-commissioned enterprise eventually started trading under the name Poljot. Far from the basic watches one might expect of a communist state, Poljot produced some highly lauded pieces, including the Sturmanskie (“Navigator”) pilot’s watch worn by the Russian Air Force and Cosmonauts, and the Aviator 3133 chronograph, which featured an intricate Russian-made movement that was more impressive than many Swiss calibres of the era.
Poljot eventually expanded their operations and started trading in the UK under the name Sekonda. At the break-up of the USSR, the British arm of the company became a brand in its own right, and the First State Watch Factory finally ceased production in 2004. Today, Poljot watches are still held in high regard, and this heritage of high quality, attractive pieces lives on in the Sekonda brand.
An important question remains: in a crowded marketplace, how has Sekonda become the UK’s number one watch brand? The answer is almost certainly in the exceptional value for money that their comprehensive range represents. Each piece is made using top quality movements, rigorous testing, strict manufacturing processes and uncompromising quality control, yet prices are extremely reasonable. A 200m water-resistant chronograph sports watch for example, is likely to cost a little over £100.
Sekonda’s popularity can also be attributed to its varied and extensive product ranges. The Gents collection includes sporty chronographs, classic diamond encrusted pieces and even traditional pocket watches. The SEKSY collection features a veritable array of choice for ladies, Partytime caters for those seeking brightly coloured fashion-led wristwear and the ONE range provides an edgy, masculine look.
Sekonda is soon to launch at TIME² so keep posted!
