TIME² for Rolex at One Hyde Park, London, is playing host to a rare vintage Rolex collection on loan from James Dowling, author of The History of Rolex. The vintage Rolex collection features timepieces ranging from 1915 to 1971 and is available to view in TIME²'s Rolex store for the next week or so, for a limited period only.
The collection includes...
1915 Sterling Silver Rebberg Rolex
Rolex was the first company to specialise in the wristwatch. For the first few years of its existence these were mostly sold to ladies, as gentlemen wore a pocket watch, but the WW1 made the wristwatch vital to officers. This watch was sold in 1915 and is likely to have seen action.
1926 18ct Cushion Oyster Rolex
Patented in 1926, the Oyster was the world's first truly waterproof wristwatch, this is one of the first pre-production models and has a dial made from porcelain.
1931 Sterling Silver Prince Rolex
The Prince was favoured by doctors in the 1930's, as the oversized seconds hand made it easy to time pulsations and respirations.
1934 9ct Oyster Perpetual Rolex
Although it wasn't the world's first automatic wristwatch, it was the first one that worked consistently and the system used by Rolex is the one used by almost all manufacturers now.
1953 Oyster Perpetual Monometer Rolex
The watch that gave birth to the Turn-O-Graph, Submariner, Sea Dweller & the GMT Master, the Monometer combined the waterproof case, the automatic movement and the rotating bezel for the first time.
1959 GMT Master Rolex
The first watch of the jet age, the GMT Master was designed in a collaborative exercise between Rolex and Pan American Airways, and was the first watch designed to track time in two timezones simultaneously.
1971 Submariner Date Rolex
The first watch to combine the capabilities of a diving watch with the usefullness of a date window under a 'cyclops' magnifying lens. The first versions of this watch are distinguished by having the word 'Submariner' printed in red.
