A rising star in the world of luxury watchmaking, British brand Bremont has been producing hand-made pieces in Biel-Bienne, Switzerland, for less than a decade. One of its latest creations is the Solo, which went on sale in July after a celebrated unveiling at Baselworld 2011.
Bremont co-founders Nick and Giles English’s shared passion for historic aircraft is reflected in the Solo’s design, which gives a heavy nod to the pilot watches of the 1940's. Yet this beautiful chronometer isn’t only designed to perform at altitude – it can also withstand the harshest of mistreatment on terra firma. The 43mm three-piece case is constructed from stainless steel that exceeds 2000 Vickers on the hardness scale. As a result, it’s around seven times more scratch resistant than typical watch grade steel, and around nine times harder. The domed scratch resistant glass is equally resilient, and its anti-reflective coating reduces reflection to less than 0.5%. With such a tough exterior, it’s little wonder Bremont watches are favoured by the likes of Bear Grylls, Olympic skier Graham Bell and free-diving world champion Sara Campbell.
The Solo is powered by Bremont’s 13 1/4" BE-36AE automatic chronometer, which features a 38-hour power reserve, performs 28,800 vibrations per hour and has 25 bearing jewels. Bremont is so proud of this highly intricate calibre movement that it wants you to see it in all its glory – flip the watch over and you will see a sapphire crystal ‘exhibition’ window integrated into the steel caseback. This quirky design feature allows you to see exactly what makes such a fine piece tick. The caseback is also engraved with a Bremont serial number, ensuring each watch is truly unique.
The Bremont Solo offered by TIME² features a black embossed leather strap and a stainless steel pin and buckle. It is water resistant to 100m, and boasts a three-year manufacturer’s guarantee.
While there are plenty of luxury pieces that take their design aesthetic from aviation instruments – such as the exceptional IWC Pilot range – few offer such extraordinary value as Bremont’s entry level piece. At just £2,550 at TIME², it would be difficult to find such a finely made chronometer for less.
