If the Hublot King Power Foudroyante All Black were a car it would be a Hummer. If it were a movie character, it would be Mad Max, armed with the only piece of industrial equipment to have survived the breakdown of civilisation.
Like the Hublot Big Bangs of which it is the linear descendant, what the modestly named King Power certainly is not is shy and retiring, the studious type. Indeed, at first glance it represents yet another sizeable bet on Hublot’s part that, for many full-blooded males, big and bold will remain as beautiful as ever, whatever the bruising our once buoyant egos may have taken through twelve months of economic meltdown.
That is what a 48mm case and a dramatically unusual design will do for you. But a closer look reveals a more complex story. Especially in its limited edition All Black version, the King Power is an altogether more subtle creation than your standard oversized watch.
With its dial composed of multiple layers of black, its casing all sharp angles, its dominant materials rubber, ceramic and composite resin, it looks more like a shard of meteorite fallen from the skies than a carefully assembled horological instrument.
With the King Power All Black, now in a similarly dramatic tourbillon version Hublot takes the evolution of the Big Bang species one step beyond.
