Men love gadgets; we can’t help it, it’s in our nature. We always want the latest car, TV, phone, sound system..etc and our watches are no different! We look for features like chronographs, subdials, linear displays, radio controlled time synchronising, stopwatches, illuminating faces and the like. We even use the water resistant level to gage how great a watch is; even though we know we will never go deeper than (maybe) 3 metres.
Luckily for us, the gadget watch has become one of the most sought after - and even fashionable - pieces available right now in menswear. [Ingersoll has just launched at TIME² with a huge array of gadget watches, so definitely check it out!]
Easing our way into the style, we have luxury design house Gucci creating digital versions of its watches with secondary time zones, whilst still maintaining the sharp styling and refined look the brand is renowned for – the perfect fusing of gadgetry with high fashion.
Then we have the introductory priced commercial brands such as Casio, Adidas and Diesel all creating their own take on the gadget watch; utilising digital displays, whilst adding extra features such as stopwatches, alarms, LED backlight functionality and most importantly... at least 3 buttons for us to fiddle around with!
Next up, we have the true super brands when it comes to specifications for true technology lovers. Welder recently launched at TIME² and has released a truly awe inspiring collection of chronographs which would look great on any real man's wrist. What stands out most are the striking dials and push-buttons which really make a feature out of the stop watches, timers and the like. The other key differential is the placement of the chronograph buttons – unusually placed at 9’o clock and 12’o clock – as they were made first and foremost for divers in mind; this positioning helps free up their hand movement whilst underwater.
G-Shock is another true gadget brand who really knows how to appeal to the gadget lover. The Premium Aviator Orange Chronograph Mens Watch GW-3000M-4AER is the true stand out of the range, mixing a bold on trend orange colour with every feature you could possibly wish for on a watch. This particular model includes a linear display, radio controlled time synchronisation, 1/110th of a second stop watch, second time zone, alarm, a neo-display (only needs a short exposure to light before it will illuminate in the dark) AND it is 200 metres water resistant! What else could you possibly need? At £250, you are getting features you would normally find on watches over double this price.
However, the true winner of the gadget watch category has to be Bell & Ross with its BR01-92 Red Radar watch. The selling point of the watch is clearly its innovative and distinct dial which has been crafted to look like a submarines radar display. This face cleverly allows you to tell the time by segmenting the hours, minutes and seconds into sections, and then using rotating discs and clever fading on the time indication discs - a brilliant example of innovation and design genius.
If you are a sucker for hardcore specs, then the watch is housed within a square carbon coated 46mm steel case, fitted with red tinted mineral glass and a screw-lock crown. I have never seen anything like this within the watch market, and we may never again, as Bell & Ross is only releasing 999 of these pieces worldwide. It is set to become a collector’s item and the ending to any “which is the best gadget watch” argument.
