Before 1983, Casio was known only for the calculators that filled classrooms and the keyboards that dominated the pop charts of the decade. In that year, however, they turned their attention to watches, unleashing the first G-Shocks on an unsuspecting public. Twenty-eight years later, and they’re a global phenomenom. If you’ve somehow managed to avoid getting on board the Casio train so far, here’s five excellent reasons why you should invest now.
1. THEY'RE SO HOT RIGHT NOW!
Unless you’ve been living under a rather unfashionable rock, you’ll know the retro look is in, and ‘80s culture is once again prevalent on the high streets and the pop charts (thankfully, hairspray and piano key ties haven’t quite made it back though). Lady Gaga and Rihanna have both sported G-Shocks lately – look closely in the Rude Boy video and you’ll see RiRi rockin’ several Baby-Gs simultaneously.
2. THEY'RE TOUGH
The clue is in the name: G-Shocks will soldier on after with the kind of mistreatment that would cause serious problems for many rival pieces. The rugged G-Shock Premium, for example, can be dunked 200m below sea level, dropped from 10m and it’s guaranteed to keep ticking for ten years. If Bear Grylls was a watch, he’d be this one.
3. THERE'S ONE FOR ANY BUDGET
Time is money, but you don’t have to be made of it to own one of these. An uber-cool entry level G-Lide will only set you back £45, but if you want to indulge in something a little more special, spoil yourself with a range-topping chronograph at £665.
4. THEY WORK WITH ANY LOOK
The G-Shock is designed to survive in extreme conditions, but it will also happily survive in your office, at a trendy bar or even when teamed with a suit at a formal event. There’s a style and colour to match every kind of personality and mode of dress, and it’sthe perfect quirky accessory to show everyone you’re not nearly as dull as Kevin from the accounts department.
5. THEY'RE PERFECT FOR SUMMER
G-Shocks are available in a vast array of bright colours, and bright colours look best on a tanned wrist. Plus, festival season is well under way (there’s a major festival somewhere in the UK almost every weekend until the end of summer!) and you’ll need something that will survive mud, spilt beers and a slew of rowdy fist-pumping sing-alongs. Leave your dress watch at home and enjoy the music with a G.
