Look at any Tommy Ton street style photo and tell me you don’t want to be that woman in the Katrantzou dress with the Celine clutch, an armful of bangles and a killer watch. Weighty, architectural bracelets (hello Lanvin) have overtaken statement necklaces as the jewel du jour, and with them go the accompanying overstated watches.
It doesn’t need to be too thought out. I love to see a mish mash of materials, from wooden bangles to gold cuffs to pop-art plastics all jumbled together with a striking watch like Chanel’s iconic ceramic J12 (or one of her more affordable cousins).
I’m not averse to mixing metals either. In fact, a matt steel watch from Marc by Marc Jacobs looks just as effective nestled against Louis Vuitton’s gold handcuff bangle as a Michael Kors rose gold number. That said, it’s nice to see a bit of harmony, so a chunky square bangle alongside a square-faced steel watch from Boss by Hugo Boss will do very nicely. And as any fashion editor will tell you, it’s always good to have a high-low mix. Like the perfect partnership of Uniqlo cashmere with Chanel tweed (one can dream, right?), there’s something appealing about a playful plastic watch by Triwa or ToyWatch hanging out with Vionnet’s finest acrylic wrist wear.
