When brothers and plane lovers, Giles and Nick English turned their backs on their City jobs to found a watch company called Bremont in memory of their late father in 2007, they took the world of fine watches by storm.
Their down to earth style coupled with enthusiasm for their labour of love quickly spilled over to fans and clients. Orders rolled in from the US navy test pilot school, Ewan MacGregor and Charley Boorman asked for Bremont prototypes for their motorbike trek through Africa, and clients now include the King of Spain and Jeremy Clarkson. Bremont recently developed a watch for the US Army’s U2 Spy Plane squadron.
It all began when Nick and Giles were children tinkering in their dad’s aeroplane workshop in Norfolk. After their father, an RAF aerobatic champion, tragically died in a flying accident in 1995 and Nick only just survived, the brothers left their corporate finance jobs at PWC and Williams de Broë, started up a digital music download business and sold it several years later, with the dream of making watches never far from their mind. While on a flying trip together, they were forced to make an overnight emergency landing in a French field, the owner of which turned out to be as crazy about watches and clocks as they were. His name was Monsieur Bremont.
The English brothers, true to their name, are resolutely patriotic. Early on, they turned part of a World War Two British Spitfire plane into the EP-120, based on the cockpit clock. Today, they’re writing a new chapter in British watchmaking, which a century ago saw the likes of Arnold, Dent and Graham being hunted down by Swiss watch lovers as much as the British now covet Swiss watches.
