TIME² interviews Christine Borg-Mirza, supervisor for the fine watch department in Selfridges, about what makes Bremont's unique MBII watch (launched exclusively in TIME²'s Selfridges concession) so interesting.
“Limited to only 10 pieces, and made exclusively for TIME² at Selfridges, the understated robust Bremont MBII watch has a bright yellow barrel on the centre of the case to match Selfridge's iconic 109 pantone yellow.
"The MBII name originated from the Martin-Baker ejection seat which has saved many lives. Sir James Martin designed the original seat for MKI following an aeroplane crash that killed Captain Valentine Baker, with whom he had founded the Martin-Baker aircraft company in 1934. The yellow colour of the barrel is linked to the colour of the Martin-Baker ejection seat.
"This ultimate shockproof watch can survive the massive G-force of an ejection seat at an air speed of up to 600 knots. Now that's pretty impressive, and no other watch can boast this.
"To achieve this level, a prototype watch was strapped to the wrist of a mannequin, which was then attached to a vibration machine set to run maximum force for hours on end to simulate the entire 30 years service span of a military helicopter. This is not to mention the temperature variations, which were tested at -40/+120 degrees Fahrenheit. And of course the ultimate acid test, the watch was ejected from an aircraft. It of course sustained the impact.
"This highly collectable 43mm automatic chronometer rated rugged watch is also perfect for every day use, with the simple fancy-free dial and interesting coloured changeable barrels which are sandwiched between harden trip-tock steel. The Pilot watch comes with two straps in calf leather and fabric, and as the watch is water resistant to 100m, this is ideal for the sporty active man who wants his timepiece to keep up with him."
