Breitling Superocean 42 Abyss Watch Review

The extreme popularity of the Breitling Superocean Heritage watch from a few years back was one of the major inspiration points of the whole vintage-looking watch craze. However, watch lovers would be amiss to neglect the most contemporary offerings their favorite brands make available. Breitling followed up the Superocean Heritage with a brand new Superocean last year. Sometimes called the Superocean Abyss, it comes in both 42mm and 44mm wide styles.

While Breitling is mostly known for its aviator themed timepieces, its dive watches are a laudable bunch. For me the watch starts with Breitling’s popular chunky steel case that is richly polished and offers a great tactile experience. On the wrist, the 42mm wide version feels medium-sized by today’s standard, but Breitling was following cries for more reasonably-sized sport watches after years of 44mm wide plus offerings exclusively.

Water resistant to 1,500 meters with an automatic helium release valve, this is a serious diving tool that unfortunately leaves out one small feature necessary for some professional divers. That being a small lumed pip at the top of the rotating diver’s bezel. Though for the majority of Superocean owners this won’t even be something they notice.

I was very surprised to see the dial style of the Superocean when I first encountered it. Unique to the brand thus far, the modern looking dial has extremely bold mostly Arabic numeral hour indicators and sizeable hands. The dial on the 44mm wide version is actually a bit different. My favorite part of course is the colored flange ring. Here in yellow, Breitling also offers the Superocean accented with colors such as blue, red, black, and white.

Inside of the Superocean is a Swiss-made ETA 2892 automatic movement – a calibre Breitling makes frequent use of. Available on a polished steel bracelet, the most comfortable way of wearing the Superocean Abyss is on one of Breitling’s rubber straps. It is worth noting that the black colored sections on the watch bezel are actually inset areas of vulcanized rubber. The rubber strap is comfortable and matched to one of the best push-button deployment clasps on the market. While technically simple, the Breitling Superocean 42 Abyss is a good looking and well-made diver with a solid modern feel to it.
