Like so many luxury brands, Gucci began life as a leather goods company. Founder Guccio Gucci sharpened his luxury eye working at London’s Savoy hotel, studying the luggage of its patrons before transferring the same refined qualities to his own craft in 1921. By the 1950s his bags were being toted by the A-list elite - Elizabeth Taylor carried the Hobo while Jackie Kennedy’s favourite shoulder bag became known as the ‘Jackie’.
Gucci’s fortunes rose and fell and it wasn't until the 1990s that watches became a main player in the Gucci accessories stable. With Tom Ford sprinkling his magic dust as Creative Director, Gucci was reinvented with a bold, sexy aesthetic, which defined the decade. Accessories were an essential part of the strategy and Gucci Timepieces were introduced in 1997.
A Gucci watch became a serious style symbol, a status signifier that can be easily spotted at a distance encircling the wrists of the fashionable and famous. Since the arrival of current Creative Director Frida Giannini in 2004, Gucci’s house motifs have become even more important. Giannini’s expert mix of heritage and modernity guarantee that the interlocking Gs, metal horsebit and green and red stripe will keep the Gucci story going well into the next chapter.
