Oh how we love a bit of gender bending! As Dolce & Gabbana proved with a procession of suited and quiffed boyish girls, we’re upgrading our boyfriend wear from plaid shirts to posh tailoring and sensible, gentlemanly shoes (give or take a sequin or two). The same goes for watches.
Setting aside the jazzy gold Kors, it’s time to focus on the classics. French fashion editors have been doing it for ages of course; they throw on Baume & Mercier’s mens’ dress watches with the same nonchalance as a plastic Casio. It has to be said, they do look very chic with a silk Le Smoking or striped cocktail pyjamas.
Women first started wearing men’s Breitlings in the eighties and they’re still doing it now – clearly they’re worth the investment. For day, a hefty Breitling bracelet watch means business when teamed with a structured blazer and chinos, not forgetting the Alaia 5-inch heels. But for less macho style, consider the quiet, grandfatherly option. Thirties-style croc-strapped watches from Tissot and Raymond Weil sit easily with pristine shirting and oversized cashmere. Sometimes it’s hard to beat the original classics.
