It takes a lot to coax me onto a plane to a country that’s colder than mine, has no tropical beaches and doesn’t even serve Caipirinhas with little umbrellas in them. So it was with some trepidation that I flew to Berlin last week where it was -8, snowing and they hadn’t seen sunshine for 17 days in a row!
Bread and Butter is a twice yearly fashion tradeshow held in Berlin Airport-Tempelhof. This year the show coincided with Berlin Fashion Week so the city was buzzing. The show specialises primarily in denim, high fashion and street wear. That’s not to say that B&B doesn’t have it’s share of names; Superdry, Diesel and Boss Orange are all represented here as well as the biggest stand with the biggest queues, G Star RAW.
The halls are split into different zones; Denim Base was by far the biggest, Sport and Street, Street Fashion, Fashion Now, Style Society, Urban Superior Women, Urban Superior Men and L.O.C.K (labels of common kin) and every hall was packed. Some labels exhibited in multiple halls depending on their ranges. L.O.C.K was one of the more popular halls; dedicated to brands that use traditional methods of manufacturing, high quality production and an obsessive attention to detail. This year Barbour, and Brooks the saddler exhibited in this hall for the first time, showing that Autumn-Winter 10 is the season for the vintage English look, and this was re-emphasised by the collections from Alan Paine and even Clarks Originals.
PRPS had everyone talking, Scotch and Soda, with their 2nd outing Maison Scotch range (first seen in here at the July 09 B&B), drew attention with a bar situated above which seemed to be packed from 10am. Diesel performed a double-whammy by advertising their BE STUPID campaign all over Berlin, meaning buyers couldn’t miss the brand even outside the show.
Think the whole “skulls made of rhinestones” and “gothic script on tees” a-la all last year has been done by now? Think again! Rock n Luck, Amplified, Rebel Cashmere and True Religion in the Style Society zone all had nods to the sparkly goth look. In the same but different vein is Disney Couture, still sparkly but with a less morbid Mickey Mouse on the front!
My fave? House of the Gods on the Religion stand, proving that come the end of summer I’ll still be wearing fake-vintage rock tees on a Sunday afternoon!
