As usual there are two parallels emerging in fashion right now. One is sporty, youthful and urban (think Alexander Wang-inspired techno-grunge) while the other is highly polished and altogether grown up.
The latter is about to get an even bigger push thanks to the fashion fest that is W.E, Madonna’s forthcoming film exploring the relationship of Wallis and Edward Simpson. [Socialite Wallis had a love affair with King Edward VIII – the Queen’s uncle – which sparked a royal crisis in the mid 1930’s when he abdicated the throne to marry her.]
Understandably, fashion types are champing at the bit. Think of the frocks! The furs! The jewels! Chiming perfectly with Miu Miu’s ‘40’s aesthetic for autumn-winter, the preferred watch is delicate, dramatic and decidedly glamorous.
Burberry’s slender gold dress watch nicely accessorises bracelet-sleeved jackets and printed silk dresses while Roberto Cavalli’s snake bangle watch adds dramatic wit to sweet Peter Pan collar blouses and neat tailored pants. Calf length pencil skirts are making a comeback and are worthy of a film noir close-up teamed with a short-sleeved knit and era-appropriate Jaeger LeCoultre watch. For evening, it’s all about the long, lean lines of a jewel-bright silk dress with tango heels and something diamond-studded from Chanel. Wallis would certainly approve.
