Luxury Swiss watch brand Brietling has just launched at TIME² and we are very excited to announce we will be offering the biggest range of Breitling watches online in the UK. Breitling is a sports watch specialist - aviation, sailing and racing - and has a number of ‘families’ or collections, but how do you go about choosing the right Breitling watch for you? TIME² watch expert Christine Borg-Mirza talks us through choosing your Breitling and what collection to go for…
Breitling consists of five families or collections: Navitimer, Windrider, Professional, Aeromarine and Breitling for Bentley. But which one would work for you?
When choosing what collection to go for, first off I would ask: What do you want your Breitling watch to do for you? Is it for the gymn, is it to wear with a suit, at work in the office or is it a sports watch to wear during a particular activity? Ask yourself what kind of sports do you play and this will help guide you into the appropriate collection. Or you may want a watch as a limited edition, or you may be wanting to go on price, look or features. Whatever you're looking for, it's important to ask these questions first as you need to narrow down Breitling when choosing your watch.
But which collection is right for you?
NAVITIMER
The Navitimer family has been designed with a pilot in mind. Features of the watches include a clear dial, stopwatch and attached slide rule- performing all calculations that a flight plan requires. The Navitimer has the classic look of the 1950's (it was launched in 1952) and it's very different to other sporting brands as it has a very traditional feel to it. This collection is not designed for swimming, as it is only water resistant to 30m. Breitling's in-house B01 movement is available in this collection.
WINDRIDER
The windrider collection is designed for sea and the most popular of the Windrider collection is the Chronomat line, which dominates Breitling. Windrider's are water resistant from 500m, have a three day power reserve, are quartz with a certified chronometer movement and have a very chunky feel to them. The watches are more robust than the Navitimer and they are definitely for men who are into their sports. If you are an all round sportsman, this is the watch for you.
B01 was the first in-house movement for Breitling and it featured in the Chronomat Windrider collection. However, you can also get the Chronomat Evolution, which is not an in-house movement.
PROFESSIONAL
Professional is the pilot's collection and includes the famous Aerospace and Emergency watches. The Red Arrows all wear an Emergency Aerospace because they have a built-in micro-transmitter which can be used to to transmit a distress signal with a range of 200 miles in an aircraft emergency. Light-weight titanium is the main metal used in this collection and the watches are run by super quartz with an accurate measurement to 1/10th of a second. The Professional is a multi-functional watch with a digital display system, alarm, chronograph, second time zone, water resistancy to 100m and a timer.
AEROMARINE
The Aeromarine is known for its connection to the sea and is highly water resistant, including features such as a helium escape valve. If you're buying your first Breitling, this is a great collection to start off with. Aeromarine has the entry price point for the brand, so good if you are also on a strict budget. The Superocean Heritage is my absolute favourite Breitling watch. It picks up from an era with Breitling when they made a certain look in the 1950's. The woven bracelet is very different to Breitling's normal look and it has a very retro 1950's feel to it. It works very well both with suits and jeans.
BREITLING FOR BENTLEY
This collection is all about speed and motorsports. If you're into your cars and how fast you can get from A to B, then this is the collection for you. The watches have a chronograph tachometer which measures speed within distance, along with a second time zone. They are chunky in look, ranging up to 49 mm in diameter, with a good water resistancy to 100m. To make a watch statement, there is a limited edition black Bentley GMT which is limited to just 1,000 pieces worldwide or for a bit of bling a fully gold timepiece.
Within each family or collection, Breitling has a mix and match approach to every watch, enabling you to customise your watch to suit your individual preferences. These include changing the clasp, strap and bracelet. The brand is respected for its sports watches, but also for its ability to be flexible with the client.
A Breitling watch is no doubt an investment purchase and it is built to last.
